DRTV
has a distinctive vocabulary. This glossary defines many
of the terms that are commonly used in the DRTV industry.
Bill
of Materials:
The bill of materials is a list of the processes involved
in the assembling of components in a kit or to complete
the finished product. 
Call
Center: a facility
that answers inbound, or places outbound telephone calls.
Call center sare also known as customer care centers,
use sophisticated software to provide a full range of
services. 
Call
to Action: Special
act now promotional incentives and ordering information.
Several are spaced throughout the productionand usually
display price and/or installment payment terms, .

Cross
Sale: Suggesting
the purchase of an additional product or service that
may not necessarily relate to the original product purchased

Drop
Shipping: When
merchandise is stored and distributed from a fulfillment
facility.Drop shipping often refers to goods being on
hand at a central warehouse prior to airtime. 
DRTV:
DRTV means Direct Response Television.
EDI:
Electronic Data Interchange,
trading documents such as orders, invoices and delivery
schedules, by electronic means from one corporate system
to another, rather than in paper form. 
ERA:
The Electronic Retailing Association
IMC:
Infomercial
Monitoring Service, Inc. reports the number and volume
of direct response programs aired on networks monitored
and issues weekly reports ranking the leaders.
ISO
9000: A detailed
and precise process that helps companies of all types
to maintain and improve quality performance standards.
The result is disciplined management and superior product
or service performance. 
JIT
(Just-in-Time) Delivery:
The shipping of products or parts and inventory so they
are received when needed, thus keeping warehouse expenses
to a minimum. 
Kitting:
Collecting and assembling materialsfor presentations,
products or packages. 
Logistics
Management: Minimizing
freight costs by negotiating
with carriers and organizing packaging and shipping for
cost effective options. 
Long
Form Informercial:
A 30-minute infomercial. A basic format for direct response
TV advertising. 
Media
Buy: The TV
or radio time, or print space, purchased to present an
offer to potential customers. 
Merchant
Account: An
account at a bank that allows a direct marketer to accept
credit cards as payment.
Payment
Processing:
A secure, real time processing system for online credit
and debit card transactions. Payment processing usually
includs authentication and verification of the credit
cards used to purchase your products or services.

Reverse
Logistics: Handling
returns including inspection and restocking or recycling
of products and processing the customer refund.
RF
Scanning: RF
scanning is used to locate every item in a warehouse with
precision.
Save-the-Sale:
Were the call center agent attempts to deal with a complaint
in such a way as to reassure the customer and avoid the
return of the product. 
Short
Form: A direct
response television format utilizing one or two-minute
commercials.
SKU:
Stock Keeping
Unit. A unique number assigned to each style/size combination
of a product. One item may have many SKUs for the differing
sizes, colors or materials, etc. 
Spokesperson:
The main person featured in an infomercial or DRTV spot.
A spokesperson is oftern a celebrity, athlete or original
developer of the featured product.
Testing:
A short run of an infomercial or spot prior to national
rollout. The success of the infomercial is evaluate as
to the appeal of the product, the offer, the show content
and the media strategy. 
Tracking
Numbers: Numbers
that are assigned to by a call center or shipping service
to track the current location of an ordered product for
customer inquires about the status of a deliverys.

Upsell:
Suggesting additional products to the original purchase
often an accessory or a deluxe, more fully-featured model.
